SPECIMEN TREES

The following sites in the ward will see new trees planted as part of the woodland creation scheme this planting season.

These include a large area of new whips on Bell Hill, and mature trees on Folly Lane and in the old Trentham's tree pits.

I'm in particular pleased about the tree pits on the Trenthams, something I have long pushed for.

Although this round of work will not see every tree pit brought back into use, it will be the first phase of this work, and will see most of the tree pits across Beeston Hill brought back into use over the next few years.

Historically, there had been an issue as the trees planting in them spread their roots, causing damage, and so were removed.

This time around, they will be planted with specially selected urban verities, selected for having smaller root bowls and on the understanding they'll have to be replaced every 50 years, rather than every 100 years as the judgment is it is better to have the benefits of the trees for 50 years rather than none at all.
