HUNSLET TROLLEY DUMPING

I've just finished a very productive meeting with Ben who is in charge of trolleys at Morrisons about how we deal with the shared concern of trolley being dumping in the area.

Each trolley costs Morrison's approximately £100 to replace, and some of the specialist trolleys designed for disabled customers cost up to £500.

This is not a victimless crime and is not only impacting those shoppers, in particular those with young children or disabilities who have specialist trolleys being stolen, from being able to shop, but ultimately the cost of constantly replacing trolleys has an upward impact on the amount of money supermarkets charge at the till.

In the short term, Morrisons will be doing an audit of all of their trolleys at Hunslet to ensure that the coin locks are functioning properly.

We'll also be having a meeting with Trolley Wise and arranging to go out with their staff to help them better understand the layout of our estates to make it easier for them to find trolleys when they are reported to them or they are on proactive sweeps.

I'll be having meetings with the street cleaning teams around what we do about trolleys that have had rubbish dumped in them, as these won't be collected, and to find a better process around how we get these cleared to allow Trolley Wise to then collect them.

There will be some educational material produced to help to inform customers of the impact of taking trolleys, and for Trolley Wise to come to the area and do some engagement work.

In the mid-term, there is an understanding that this site will need the introduction of a magnetic locking system, and this will now be worked towards.
