Hunslet Tenants and Residents Association Report July 2025

Here us my reports to the residents meeting help on Friday the 11th if July, at Involve Leeds.

--

Hunslet Square Phase One: The mural has now been installed. The nature interpretation board has also now been put in place, with the history boards due any time. Staff at Hunslet Community and Library have now had their training for the dynamic lighting and will now start to follow the Flag and Ceremonies timetable for use in other civic buildings.

We'll now be working on plans for Phase Two, which will include retail units for local start-ups, outdoor cinema space, markets, improvements to the Whitfield Avenue planters, and public artwork commemorating the old tram lines under Hunslet Square.

This would be over £200k to deliver, and so we’ve asked Council Officers to cost each individual project so that they can apply for external funding as and when it becomes available.

Church Street and Pepper Park Noticeboards: These have still not been repaired fully, and this is being chased with our Greenspaces Team.

The Sun Inn: Following the submission of a pre-planning application, which would have seen the demolition of the site, the planning authority has written to the owner to advise it will not support an application that sees the site demolished. This does not mean that the owner can't submit an application that doesn't see it demolished, but it does send a clear signal that they will struggle to have an application approved that does. In the meantime, the enforcement activity will continue.

Rocheford Big Clean-up: We're working with the TARA committee to arrange a community clean-up in August 2025, with targeted work to clear grot-spots and the allocation of bulky waste collection points to support the clear-out of bulky waste to reduce the likelihood of fly-tipping.

Christmas Light Switch-On: We're working with your committee to have a bigger and better light switch-on, booked in for the 15th of November 2025. We're happy to confirm that the Deputy Lord Mayor agreed to turn them on. More details will follow once work begins to arrange the event.

Belinda Street Electric Vehicle Charging Point: We know some residents are not happy with the location and the lack of consultation.

Housing Leeds and the Climate and Energy Team accept there should have been a fresh round of consultation, as the original plans were agreed two years ago.

There is no possibility of moving the site now due to cost, but both departments will not go ahead with other sites across the estate until other rounds of consultation happen.
